Research Fellowship Program
The Research Fellowship program offers clinicians the opportunity to gain experience and exposure to the clinical research process. It is a part-time opportunity
(approximately 10 hours per week) with hourly compensation.
- Maintaining quality control standards to preserve the integrity of data and findings
- Scheduling and conducting interviews
- Analyzing data using various statistical methods
- Writing reports to summarize data and the implications of the results
- Opportunity for presentation of information
Orthopedic Residency Program
In partnership with ATI, the mission of the Orthopedic Residency program is to create a growth opportunity for Physical Therapists interested in becoming board-certified clinical specialists in Orthopedic physical therapy. The program provides
a quality advanced education with guided growth and continuous improvement through strategic initiatives to enhance patient care.
- Orthopedic locations include Boston, MA, Greenville, SC, Seattle, WA, and the Washington D.C.
- Area.-Runs August through the following September
- Credentialed for 11 years
- 98% first time pass rate on the OCS

Sports Residency Program
In partnership with ATI, the mission of the Sports Residency program is to create a growth opportunity for physical therapists interested in becoming a board-certified clinical specialist in sports physical therapy. The program will provide a quality advanced education, including guided growth and continuous improvement through strategic initiatives to enhance patient care.
- Sports locations include Baltimore, MD, Birmingham, AL, Charleston, SC, Chicago, IL, Greenville,
SC, and Phoenix, AZ. - Runs August through the following September
- Credentialed for 16 years
- 95% first time pass rate on the SCS

Upper Extremity Athlete Fellowship Program
In partnership with ATI, the fellowship is a 12-months long commitment. The first five months (September-January) are spent in Greenville, SC, focusing on intense upper extremity mentoring by our faculty. The last seven months (February-August) are spent with our team affiliate. The fellowship focuses on preparing and developing clinicians for working in professional sports and who are ready to treat all upper extremity injuries, ranging from Little League Elbow to shoulder arthroplasty and hand and wrist injuries.
ATI achieves this through our growing partnerships with American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) at Steadman Hawkins of the Carolinas, Kansas City Royals and Colorado Rockies organizations and more. Our fellows can contribute to research projections, ranging from clinical care expertise to pre-season assessments on baseball players, led by Sr. Vice President of Clinical Excellence Charles Thigpen, PhD, PT, ATC; Sr. Director of Care Delivery Optimization Ellen Shanley, PhD, PT, OCS; and Upper Extremity Throwing Program Coordinator Daniel Kline, DPT, SCS, ATC.
The program curriculum is made up of direct patient care in both an out patient clinical setting and a professional sports athletic training room, mentorship, didactic learning, specialty observation, and the
opportunity to instruct in our Sports and Orthopedic residencies.
- Fellows spend 6 months in Greenville, SC, and then 6 months in Arizona working with a Major League Baseball team during spring training and remain at their rehab facility.
- More than 10 graduates of this program currently sit on Major League staffs.
- Partnerships with the following professional teams: Kansas City Royals™, Colorado Rockies™, and Chicago Cubs™.
